It was founded on May 30, 1952, by Roberto Marinho as the comic book and magazine publishing arm of Organizações Globo, today known as Grupo Globo, one of the largest media groups in Latin America.\r\n\r\nAlthough it belonged to the same conglomerate, the company was initially unable to use the Editora Globo name because Livraria do Globo, founded in 1883 in Porto Alegre, had already been publishing under the Globo brand since 1928. This situation changed only in 1986, when Marinho acquired the southern publisher. After the purchase, RGE officially adopted the name Editora Globo.\r\n\r\nThe newspaper O Globo itself, founded in 1925, had maintained a strong relationship with comics since the late 1930s, publishing material through lines such as O Globo Juvenil (1937) and Gibi (1939). On January 22, 1940, it began running the daily newspaper strip of The Phantom, helping establish what would become one of the most enduring properties in the Brazilian market.\r\n\r\nFrom its early decades, RGE’s catalog relied heavily on foreign licenses. The publisher handled characters from King Features Syndicate, including Mandrake the Magician, Flash Gordon, and The Phantom, and also titles from Harvey Comics such as Little Dot and Richie Rich. RGE eventually became the principal Brazilian publisher of The Phantom and even produced original local stories. A dedicated title, Fantasma Magazine, ran from 1953 until 1992.\r\n\r\nKing Features’ supremacy at RGE began to erode in 1968, when numerous titles were canceled in the face of the growing popularity of Marvel and DC superheroes in Brazil — a phenomenon nicknamed the “Batmania” — driven largely by releases from Editora Brasil-América Limitada (aka EBAL). Among RGE’s adventure heroes, only proven sellers such as The Phantom and the Black Knight remained, while in the humor segment characters like Beetle Bailey and Richie Rich survived the cuts.\r\n\r\nDuring the 1960s, The Phantom reached extraordinary sales success and is often cited as the best-selling comic book of its era in Brazil, with print runs around 200,000 copies per issue between 1967 and 1969.\r\n\r\nBy the mid-1970s, RGE shifted most of its publications to a digest-sized format. Many critics consider this period the beginning of a decline. Editorial missteps followed, notably a controversial reformulation of Sítio do Picapau Amarelo, which triggered the departure of several domestic artists.\r\n\r\nIn 1979, RGE secured the Brazilian rights to publish characters from Marvel Comics. Monthly titles starring Spider-Man, Hulk, and Fantastic Four were launched, in addition to anthologies or irregular collections featuring X-Men, Nova, and Spider-Woman. As with earlier initiatives, the lack of long-term editorial planning became evident to readers, contributing to a drop in sales.\r\n\r\nIn January 2018, Editora Globo, Infoglobo, and Valor Econômico were merged into a single company under the Editora Globo structure, which came to manage 21 brands. Later that year, Grupo Globo began a wider integration process involving TV Globo, Globosat, Globo.com, and Globoplay under the initiative known as “Uma Só Globo\" (One Unified Globo). Wind, George Ungar, Adrian B. Lopez, and Morton Myers. In some combination or other, they owned all these titles. They frequently changed ownership and addresses of both publication offices and editorial offices. Several titles were run from the same office at times or were next door to other of the titles. Some titles moved from one publisher to another. Researcher Bob Hughes has described the group as, “A circular group of owners hiding behind a lot of fake addresses.”\r\n\r\nMichael Estrow was the president of Leader News, the distributor of the majority of these titles, who probably provided financing as distributors often did. At some point, Friedman-owned titles were switched to CDC distribution while the Stricof-owned titles switched to Kable News. After the Senate 'comic book' hearings in April-June 1954 (where Friedman appeared) the new company of Merit was created to help Friedman’s companies remove any taint of the hearings.
